Chapter 35
* * *
Ben
âWhere are you going?â Jack asked me after a bullshit lunch where we had to play nice with a tour sponsor and his entourage.
âTo find Sierra,â I said, walking faster. I could see the hired SUV that had dropped us off at the restaurant, idling by the curb at the end of the sidewalk.
âDude, sheâs not in there. She took an Uber to go to the hotel.â
âFuck.â I stopped beside a bunch of cacti surrounded by gravel.
He made a face. âAbout Sierra . . . I think you should leave her alone.â
âNot gonna happen,â I said, narrowing my eyes. âYou canât have her, Jack.â
âBecause you pissed on her, and so now sheâs yours?â He jerked up his chin. âIs that how you see the situation in your warped, possessive mind?â
âBasically, yeah. Whatâs wrong with that?â He didnât need to know the exact specifics. Those were between her and me.
âSo, you want her, and to hell with what she wants or needs or anything else?â Jack crossed his arms over his chest and gave me a pointed look.
âThatâs not true.â But hell, it was mostly true.
He shook his head. âSheâs not the type of woman youâre used to.â
âI get that.â
Jack uncrossed his arms to count on his fingers. âShe has Dylan. Sheâs Bradâs sister. Sheâs our tour manager. Thereâs a lot that should deter you, but none of those are the biggest one.â
âMe, you mean.â I lifted my chin to a belligerent height. âIâm the biggest deterrent.â
âYeah.â He looked as uncomfortable to give me his answer as I was to receive it. âIâm not your biggest fan, Ben. Thatâs no secret.â He took a step forward. Bridging the sizable gap between us, he placed his hand on my shoulder. âBut Iâm your friend. Hell, youâre more than just that to me. You and Rush are my brothers. Thatâs why it hurt so fucking much what went down with you and Carrie.â
Looking him straight in the eye, I said firmly, âShe came on to meââ
âI know she did. I get it now. You wanted me to recognize what was going on, to acknowledge that she was stepping out on me.â
âAll the time,â I said, wanting him to get it and move on. âNot just that one incident with me.â
âRight.â Wincing, he dropped his hand. âIt pisses you off, her taking advantage of me. Because even though you donât want to admit it, you care about me too.â
Fuck yeah, I do. I nodded once.
âYour internal code operates differently than most.â He spread his feet further apart and gave me his grim verdict. âYou have trouble connecting emotionally. You donât do serious relationships, and those things are exactly what a woman like Sierra needs. So, consider this my warning to you, though in a much more direct and less dramatic fashion than what you did with Carrie.â
He shook his head at me.
âDonât go there with Sierra, Ben. Donât cross the line she drew this morning. If you do, I donât think itâs going to be only her who gets hurt.
