Chapter 35

* * *

Ben

“Where are you going?” Jack asked me after a bullshit lunch where we had to play nice with a tour sponsor and his entourage.

“To find Sierra,” I said, walking faster. I could see the hired SUV that had dropped us off at the restaurant, idling by the curb at the end of the sidewalk.

“Dude, she’s not in there. She took an Uber to go to the hotel.”

“Fuck.” I stopped beside a bunch of cacti surrounded by gravel.

He made a face. “About Sierra . . . I think you should leave her alone.”

“Not gonna happen,” I said, narrowing my eyes. “You can’t have her, Jack.”

“Because you pissed on her, and so now she’s yours?” He jerked up his chin. “Is that how you see the situation in your warped, possessive mind?”

“Basically, yeah. What’s wrong with that?” He didn’t need to know the exact specifics. Those were between her and me.

“So, you want her, and to hell with what she wants or needs or anything else?” Jack crossed his arms over his chest and gave me a pointed look.

“That’s not true.” But hell, it was mostly true.

He shook his head. “She’s not the type of woman you’re used to.”

“I get that.”

Jack uncrossed his arms to count on his fingers. “She has Dylan. She’s Brad’s sister. She’s our tour manager. There’s a lot that should deter you, but none of those are the biggest one.”

“Me, you mean.” I lifted my chin to a belligerent height. “I’m the biggest deterrent.”

“Yeah.” He looked as uncomfortable to give me his answer as I was to receive it. “I’m not your biggest fan, Ben. That’s no secret.” He took a step forward. Bridging the sizable gap between us, he placed his hand on my shoulder. “But I’m your friend. Hell, you’re more than just that to me. You and Rush are my brothers. That’s why it hurt so fucking much what went down with you and Carrie.”

Looking him straight in the eye, I said firmly, “She came on to me—”

“I know she did. I get it now. You wanted me to recognize what was going on, to acknowledge that she was stepping out on me.”

“All the time,” I said, wanting him to get it and move on. “Not just that one incident with me.”

“Right.” Wincing, he dropped his hand. “It pisses you off, her taking advantage of me. Because even though you don’t want to admit it, you care about me too.”

Fuck yeah, I do. I nodded once.

“Your internal code operates differently than most.” He spread his feet further apart and gave me his grim verdict. “You have trouble connecting emotionally. You don’t do serious relationships, and those things are exactly what a woman like Sierra needs. So, consider this my warning to you, though in a much more direct and less dramatic fashion than what you did with Carrie.”

He shook his head at me.

“Don’t go there with Sierra, Ben. Don’t cross the line she drew this morning. If you do, I don’t think it’s going to be only her who gets hurt.
